The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Alexander C. M. Carter (MCSN: 0-20648), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, 22 July 1944. Placing his platoon in the front lines in a desperate effort to hold the beachhead established by his regiment, Second Lieutenant Carter valiantly led his men in fierce hand-to-hand fighting against a superior Japanese force heavily attacking his sector. Carrying on courageously despite darkness and great odds, he personally accounted for the death of an enemy officer before sacrificing his own life in the superb defense of a vital position and, by his forceful and inspiring leadership, contributed immeasurably to the success of the entire operation. His unwavering devotion to the fulfillment of an extremely hazardous mission was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
