The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Thomas J. Carroll (MCSN: 0-18791), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Company A, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 17 June 1944. After leading his platoon in an assault upon Hill 790, First Lieutenant Carroll was reorganizing his men when his company began to receive heavy hostile machine-gun and rifle fire from a high rocky area to the front. With casualties being sustained and certain units forced to withdraw to more covered positions, he deliberately exposed himself to enemy fire to go to the aid of two severely wounded men and carry them to safety. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Carroll and the United States Naval Service.
