Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6881

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles R. Carr (MCSN: 362584), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, from 21 to 25 July 1944. With his group assigned as assault squad of a rifle platoon during the attack on Fonte Hill, on the morning of 25 July, Sergeant Carr boldly maneuvered his men through heavy fire from hostile mortars to overrun the Japanese positions, killing all members of three mortar crews with only one casualty in his squad. Later, when the platoon came under heavy cross-fire from enemy machine guns in caves a short distance to the front, he courageously exposed himself to the rain of fire to supervise the movement of his squad and, although painfully wounded in the course of his action, steadfastly refused to be evacuated. When it became apparent that a flame thrower was needed to dislodge the enemy, he voluntarily started across an open field swept by hostile fire to obtain one and, wounded again before reaching the weapon, was returned for evacuation. By his fortitude, initiative and unselfish devotion to duty throughout, Sergeant Carr upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
