The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert W. Carhart (MCSN: 369054), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific Area on January 3, 1944. Despite hostile fire from concealed pillboxes, Sergeant Carhart fought his way through dense jungle undergrowth and over difficult and unfamiliar terrain, going ahead of his squad to determine the position of an enemy machine gun which was slowing down the advance of his company. Skillfully directing an attack toward the Japanese emplacement, he continued to move forward and, encountering a wounded platoon scout from an adjacent unit, started back with him toward his own lines. With bold defiance of danger, he advanced in the face of hostile fire, killing two of the enemy, and, although wounded in the neck, succeeded in reaching an aid station before he was again injured. Sergeant Carhart’s cool courage and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
