The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Harvey C. Carbaugh (MCSN: 214552), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 5 August 1944. Leading his platoon in a one-hour attack against the well-organized and well-defended enemy positions, in the face of heavy mortar, machine-gun, rifle and grenade fire, Platoon Sergeant Carbaugh remained with or ahead of the assault squads at all times, covering the entire platoon front, advancing squads and tanks, designating enemy target, attending to the evacuation of seven wounded man and arranging for the replenishment of ammunition. While directing the attack on the last remaining enemy pillbox, he sustained severe wounds from an enemy hand grenade. By his indomitable fighting spirit and cool courage, he contributed materially to the infliction of heavy damage on the Japanese and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
