The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bruce J. Calloway (MCSN: 917432), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Automatic Rifleman serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 8 March 1945. In an attack during which his platoon suffered severe casualties from the intense and accurate fire of an enemy machine gun, Private First Class Calloway observed a Marine lying helpless and wounded some distance from the general front. Immediately advancing to an exposed position and directing a volume of protective fire against the Japanese weapon, he succeeded in neutralizing its deadly fire and covering the evacuation of the casualty. Although wounded in the preceding act, he pushed forward, urging his men in a valiant effort to complete the destruction of the hostile emplacement before he collapsed from a second and fatal wound. A fearless leader, Private First Class Calloway, by his bold initiative and cool courage throughout this engagement upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
