The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Warren B. Breeher (MCSN: 412354), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters & Service Company, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the occupation of Saipan Island in the Marianas, on 7 July 1944. Observing a Japanese soldier running past his station to the center of the command post while on duty at the regimental switchboard, Corporal Breeher shouted a warning simultaneously with the sounding of the general alert and, cautioning those nearby not to endanger their comrades on the post by shooting at the invader, steadfastly continued to operate his switchboard in the sudden emergency. When a burst of fire struck close by, he called for the shooting to cease but was fatally wounded immediately thereafter by a second burst which also struck and killed the Japanese within ten feet of the switchboard. Corporal Breeher’s alert initiative, cool courage and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of extreme peril reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
