The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Rex A. Biggs (MCSN: 295663), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 27 February 1945. While moving forward with his unit under heavy fire, Corporal Biggs noticed a wounded man lying in a position which was covered by enemy fire. Although wounded himself in an attempt to bring the man to his own lines, he rendered first aid and then dragged the casualty to safety. By his indomitable courage, he undoubtedly saved the life of his wounded comrade, and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
