The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bernard J. Best (MCSN: 380738), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Marine Parachute Battalion during an attack against enemy Japanese forces on Choiseul Island, Solomon Islands, on 30 October 1943. Courageously returning to the scene of action after the order for withdrawal had been given, Private First Class Best risked his life under constant sniper fire to carry a wounded comrade back to safety. His gallant action in the face of grave peril resulted in saving the life of a fellow Marine and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
