The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Roy L. Barnes (MCSN: 345110), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 21 August 1942. Although ordered away from a hostile position, Private Barnes, with fearless determination and complete disregard for his own personal safety, advanced to a point where he could shoot a grenade from the hand of a Japanese soldier, thereby saving the lives of comrades who were in direct line of the enemy’s aim. While boldly attacking another hostile position later in the day, he was killed in action. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
