The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bennett Bailey, Jr. (MCSN: 409611), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, THIRD Amphibious Corps, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. When communications with the left flank platoon of his company were lost during a fierce enemy counterattack, Corporal Bailey volunteered to lay a telephone line from this platoon to the company command post. Despite bayonet wounds received during hand-to-hand fighting, he refused evacuation and continued with his work until communications were restored. In addition, he guided men carrying extra machine guns and ammunition to this isolated platoon. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Bailey and the United States Naval Service.
