The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Urbano Arrey (MCSN: 537146), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Automatic Rifleman of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, on 29 May 1945. Severely wounded when hostile machine gun fire pinned down his platoon, Private First Class Arrey immediately directed effective fire which caused the enemy to seek cover temporarily and permitted the rest of the platoon to find positions of comparative safety. Unable to move due to his serious wounds, he bravely continued to fire until one magazine had been used and, when the Japanese sniper resumed fire, was fatally wounded before he could reload his weapon. His courageous initiative and indomitable fighting spirit were contributing factors in the success of his company in subsequently capturing its objective, and his exemplary devotion to duty reflects great credit on Private First Class Arrey and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
