The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Thomas J. Alberghini (MCSN: 0-23461), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Agat Village, Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. Leading his platoon in the assault inland from the beach on D-Day, Second Lieutenant Alberghini sustained painful wounds while attacking an enemy machine gun position but refusing evacuation or removal to safety, continued to lead his platoon eight hours longer, leaving only after his men were dug in for the night defense and his Commanding Officer had ordered his return to the aid station. His aggressive fighting spirit, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
