The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator Kenneth Eugene Coldicott, United States Navy, for heroism while serving with Patrol Squadron TWENTY-TWO (VP-22) on board a Navy P3B aircraft which impacted the water one mile southwest of the Naval Air Station, Cubi Point, Republic of the Philippines on 27 June 1979. Following the crash, Chief Petty Officer Coldicott climbed out of his seat and discovered an injured and dazed crewman laying on his back. Realizing the aircraft was sinking and the situation was urgent, Chief Petty Officer Coldicott released the injured crewman’s seat belt and assisted him into the water. Once clear of the wreckage, Chief Petty Officer Coldicott realized that the injured crewman had not followed him and remained in the area of the aircraft. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the danger involved, he returned to the wreckage and pulled the injured crewman to safety. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Chief Petty Officer Coldicott undoubtedly saved the injured crewman from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
