The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Mess Management Specialist First Class Mariano Del Roasrio Cabrestante, United States Navy, for heroism while attached to U.S.S. KILAUEA (AE-26) and returning from a non-military associated civil job in Pittsburg, California, on 22 September 1976. Upon observing that a police officer of the Pittsburg Police Department was in the process of being overpowered by a male suspect, Petty Officer Cabrestante, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly rushed to the police officer’s assistance and attempted to subdue the suspect. During the course of the struggle, the subject wrested the service revolver from the officer and fired a shot at Petty Officer Cabrestante and the officer. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and then arriving assisting police officers. Petty Officer Casrestante’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risks undoubtedly prevented the death or further injury to the police officer; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
