The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Electrician’s Mate First Class David E. Brink, United States Navy, for heroism while attached to Naval Air Technical Training Center, Lakehurst, New Jersey, during the rescue of passengers aboard Flight 995 in Malaga, Spain, which crashed after an aborted take-off from Malaga Airport on 14 September 1982. After escaping the wreckage, Petty Officer Brink, showing total disregard for his own safety, returned to the burning plane numerous times to aid other passengers in their escape. Despite intense flames and heat, Petty Officer Brink relentlessly worked to ensure the safety of injured survivors. Through his daring bravery, he assisted many passengers stranded on a burning wing and on clogged escape chutes who may have otherwise perished in the disaster. Not until rescue workers and equipment arrived on the scene did Petty Officer Brink cease his tireless efforts. Petty Officer Brink’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly saved numerous passengers from further injury or death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
