The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class James Robert Barnhart (NSN: 5999140), United States Navy, for heroism while attached to Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-THREE (VA-153), based aboard U.S. Naval Air Station, Lemoore, California. On 22 December 1974, Petty Officer Barnhart, while en route to the Air Station, observed a car leave the road and crash into the Kings River. He immediately stopped his car and although not a strong swimmer and with complete disregard for his own safety, unhesitatingly entered the icy water to effect the rescue of the unconscious and completely submerged driver. Petty Officer Barnhart’s prompt and courageous actions in the face of great personal risk saved the man from drowning and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
