The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph J. Marcello (ASN: 35924471), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Saarlautern, Germany. On 18 March 1945, Private Marcello, while carrying a load of much needed ammunition to his Machine-gun squad, was wounded in both legs. Realizing the urgency of his mission he carried on and delivered his load. Bandaging his own wounds, he completed a second trip before accepting first aid. Then before submitting to further medical attention he helped man a machine-gun for four hours, materially assisting in breaking up an enemy counter attack. His fortitude, staunch determination and devotion to duty under the most trying circumstances reflect the highest credit upon Private Marcello and the military service.
