(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Constructionman Recruit Robert L. Boyd, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life on the pier at Port Hueneme, California, on 23 January 1983. Constructionman Recruit Boyd and a comrade were summoned by pleas from a woman to help a man struggling in the water. They raced down the pier and onto the beach where they scrambled out of their uniforms and dashed into the storm-driven waves. Upon reaching the weakly struggling man, they pushed and pulled him through the waves to shore. Almost exhausted themselves, they carried him up onto the beach where he was then transported by medical personnel for treatment.
