Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 292 (March 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John M. Jennings (ASN: 0-1322556), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 1 February 1945 while serving with Company E, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Grosslangenfeld, Germany. During an attack on the town, an enlisted man was wounded critically and lay in an exposed position. An Aid Man attempted to reach the casualty but was shot and killed by a sniper. Second Lieutenant Jennings, fully realizing the danger involved, voluntarily and at risk of his life, left a position of cover in a heroic attempt to rescue the wounded man. Despite the devastating machine gun and small arms fire, he reached the casualty but was killed by sniper fire. His gallantry will be a lasting inspiration to his men and was in accordance with high military tradition.
