The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Earl T. Jones, United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in the performance of his duty as Diving Officer during a highly successful and aggressive FIFTH War Patrol of the Submarine U.S.S. DACE (SS-247) in enemy controlled waters. This patrol was conducted in the Southwest Pacific Area from 1 September to 6 November 1944. His superb handling of the boat as Diving Officer was of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer by enabling him to approach undetected and attack enemy shipping which resulted in the destroying of one major enemy warship and two large enemy merchantmen. His expert control of the boat during the subsequent depth charge attacks enabled the vessel to escape undamaged and return to fight again. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
