The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Captain Douglas C. Lundin, United States Air Force, for meritorious achievement as Special Agent, Air Force Office of Special Investigations, 2d Field Investigations Region, 24th Expeditionary Field Investigations Squadron, Expeditionary Detachment 2411, while engaged in ground operations against the enemy at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, from 15 May 2009 to 4 November 2009. During this period, Agent Lundin conducted 67 combat patrols while avoiding improvised explosive devices and small arms fire to secure Joint Base Balad from the active Al Qaeda in Iraq and Jaysh al Islami enemy networks. He planned and executed 127 outside-the-wire missions that discovered 8 weapons caches, 6 roadside improvised explosive devices, and led to the neutralization of 5 insurgents. He directed 5 named operations targeting in-direct fire and improvised explosive device manufacturing cells that resulted in the identification of 15 insurgents and destruction or capture of 20 weapons systems. He provided superior investigative support to Joint Air Force and Army named Operation “SNAKE OIL,” that disrupted a multimillion dollar fuel theft scheme, by garnering six confessions from Iraqi detainees. The confessions connected the profits from the theft directly to financial support for enemy networks. Finally, Agent Lundin’s informant handling expertise led to the discovery of the whereabouts of Joint Base Balad’s top two high-value individuals, conducting indirect fire attacks against the base. The information enabled the United States Army to conduct operations against them, effectively driving them underground, reducing the rocket and mortar attacks by 90 percent from that area. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Agent Lundin in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
