Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 72 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant Lonnie R. Hall (ASN: 6389897), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 15 February 1q944, near Mount Trocchio, Italy. First Sergeant Hall’s battery was subjected to heavy enemy shell fire, and fragments struck and severely wounded one of his men. Upon being informed of the wounded soldier, First Sergeant Hall immediately left the safety of a ditch to telephone for the battery aid man. Finding the telephone wires shot out, he made his way across open ground under concentrated hostile fire in search of medical aid. Twice heavy shells burst within ten yards of him, but he continued forward. On reaching the executive’s post, First Sergeant Hall learned that one of the gun pits had sustained a direct hit and the aid man had gone there. Again he moved through heavy fire, arrived at the gun pit, and assisted in giving first aid to the wounded. He then led the aid man to the assistance of the first injured man. First Sergeant Hall’s courage, determination and regard for the welfare of his men reflect the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
