The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Carl E. Moore, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 3 August 1943, near Troina, Sicily. While on a reconnaissance mission in the area, a patrol from Troop B, 91st Reconnaissance Squadron, encountered extremely heavy enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire, and three of its members were so badly wounded they were unable to return with the rest of the patrol. When this fact was reported to Troop Headquarters volunteers were called for to extricate the wounded men from their dangerous position. This group volunteered for the task, knowing they would have to traverse three hazardous miles up a river bed which had been heavily mined with German “S” and Teller mines. On the way they were placed under heavy artillery and mortar fire, but persevered until they reached the casualties, finding one of them wounded in both legs and the other two shot dead. The three were placed on litters and the group alternated in carrying the litters and protecting the litter-bearers on the journey back through the mine field, where they were again under continued enemy fire. The courage, perseverance, and high conception of teamwork displayed by these men in the discharge of a dangerous mission, voluntarily assumed, reflect great credit upon themselves and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
