The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Master Sergeant Garner Bailey, Jr., United States Marine Corps, for heroism aboard Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona, on 25 May 1978. While off in the distance, Master Sergeant Bailey saw smoke and heard screams coming forth within the base housing area, he rushed to the location and discovered a quarters was on fire. After taking steps to contain and help prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings, he found out that a small child was still inside the flaming structure. Master Sergeant Bailey, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully award of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly entered the quarters on three different occasions to attempt a rescue. His efforts to locate the child ended only after the boy had been found by firefighting personnel and he, himself, had been overcome by smoke and heat. Master Sergeant Bailey’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of extreme peril reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
