The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Garland Wilburn Woolsey (ASN: 38036835), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Valence, France, on 30 August 1944. Technical Sergeant Woolsey’s machine gun platoon and a rifle platoon were advancing in trucks when their convoy was halted by enemy riflemen. He swiftly directed his men in setting up their machine gun along the side of the road. Then, spotting an enemy soldier attempting to steal one of the trucks, he shot the German. After disabling the truck to prevent its capture, he killed another soldier who attacked whim. While approximately 250 enemy infantrymen surrounded the two platoons, Technical Sergeant Woolsey, from an exposed position, directed his men in firing on the hostile troops. Although confronted with overwhelming odds, Sergeant Woolsey led his group in fighting through the ring of enemy soldiers and returning to friendly lines. Technical Sergeant Woolsey’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
