On that date, a patrol of twenty-nine men from Company B attacked a fortified Japanese position. When a gap developed in the center, Sergeant Wojewodzic reconnoitered the area and quickly moved his own squad to plug the opening. He then led a daring frontal attack which routed the enemy from their position and saved the patrol from heavy casualties. Sergeant Wojewodzic was mortally wounded in the left shoulder during the assault. Sergeant Wojewodzic’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
