The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Charley Howard Wise (ASN: 20703749), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Anti-Tank Company, in action against enemy forces on 20 February 1943 near Sbiba, Tunisia. A member of his section was severely wounded and lay exposed in open terrain under continuing enemy machine gun fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Wise went to rescue the wounded man, but was himself severely wounded. Despite the fact that his wound deprived him of speech, by dint of great determination he heroically retained command of his section, and issuing the orders in writing and by signs, kept his men in position until dark. His outstanding bravery and noble concern for others’ safety, his retention of the responsibilities of leadership, even in pain and deprived of speech, maintained the morale of the section and served as a brilliant example of the high traditions of the military service.
