The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Edward Woodrow Wild (ASN: 0-420448), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Forward Artillery Observer with the 169th Field Artillery Battalion, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 20 July 1943 through 5 August 1943. To assure destruction of heavily-fortified enemy positions, Lieutenant Wild frequently moved beyond the infantry in the front lines to observe and direct fire accurately. Fully realizing that any miscalculation in range or defect in ammunition would cause his death, he directed artillery fire to within forty yards of his own position. When he was wounded he refused evacuation for proper medical attention and courageously continued to perform his duties. First Lieutenant Wild’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
