The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Harry Weiss (ASN: 32064939), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Vesly, France, on 13 July 1944. Serving as an office clerk, when the fighting intensified near La Haye du Puits, France, Sergeant Weiss left his desk and took up a machine gun, and went up with a forward section of a front line company. When elements of a hard-pressed platoon were stemmed in their advance by a barrage of enemy small arms fire, Sergeant Weiss exposed himself to the enemy by standing up and leading his men to a more secure position. There he directed their fire. He checked their disposition and ammunition supply. Then he led his unit in an assault during which he went out alone and charged an enemy pillbox. Although he was armed only with a rifle, he went into the pillbox and captured six German soldiers. Later he led his unit on in the assault until he was mortally wounded by machinegun fire. Sergeant Weiss’ were an inspiration to his men and his extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
