The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Walter Weir (ASN: 16151362), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 and 7 June 1944. On 6 June 1944, Sergeant Weir landed with a small group in the vicinity of *****, France. The group was under continuous fire from the enemy, which surrounded them as soon as they landed. Sergeant Weir, noticing the heaviest fire coming from a nearby house, attacked the house alone and captured three of the enemy. On the following day in the vicinity of *****, France, Sergeant Weir and four men volunteered to knock out enemy weapons which were firing on some gliders which contained vitally needed supplies. Sergeant Weir and his men were pinned down about fifty yards from an enemy machine gun emplacement. After he had expended his M-1 ammunition, Sergeant Weir charged across the open field, and with hand grenades, wiped out the machine gun nest and caused the remainder of the enemy to withdraw. Sergeant Weir’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
