(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jimmie Dan Walton (ASN: 44005824), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 7 April 1945. When a two-man bazooka team operating well in advance of the company became entangled in a mesh of barbed wire in the path of enemy fire, Private Walton slowly worked to the entanglement and cut the wire to free the gunners, then cut a path forward through which his company could pass. When an enemy machine gun fired at him, he started forward, intent upon eliminating the gun single-handed instead of seeking shelter. He was mortally wounded before he reached the machine gun. Private First Class Walton’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 75th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
