The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Roy C. Walls (ASN: 35084781), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 11 February 1945. When his platoon, occupying an abandoned house, was surrounded by enemy troops near Oberhoffen, France, Private Walls exposed himself in a doorway to fire at an approaching enemy group. He killed four and forced the remainder to withdraw. Then, moving into the attack, he killed three enemy bazooka men and wounded several others. Observing an enemy machine gun in a house nearby, he ran downstairs and into the street where, despite a heavy machinegun attack, he calmly opened fire. The machine gun was silenced and the enemy force was routed. Private First Class Walls’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
