The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Harvey L. Wallace (ASN: 6971550), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1277th Engineer Combat Battalion (Separate), SEVENTH Army, in action against enemy forces near Hoste-Haut, France, on 18 January 1945. While engaged in arming M2A1 anti-personnel mines, Sergeant Wallace, with great presence of mind and with utter disregard for his own life, threw his body across an ignited anti-personnel mine to save the lives of the members of his squad who were standing nearby. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
