The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Glenn Leland Vosburgh (ASN: 20601034), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 132d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 3 January 1943. When intense enemy fire wounded three men in his platoon, Private First Class Vosburgh left the safety of his foxhole and made his way three times through a field of fire to his wounded comrades, carrying them 40 yards to a place of safety where medical aid could be administered promptly. He returned to his machinegun just as the enemy was turning its fire on a neighboring company. Removing his gun from its tripod, Private First Class Vosburgh leaped out of his foxhole and covered the trees and ridges at his front with direct machinegun fire. His bold act and steady gunfire silenced the Japanese guns. Private First Class Vosburgh’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
