Voltero (ASN: 31301199), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Hill 251 on the outskirts of Mittelwihr, France, on 17 and 18 December 1944. Sergeant Voltero courageously destroyed German machine gun nests that were causing serious casualties to his unit and was mortally wounded in the conduct of his heroic actions. He fell in no-man’s land, and his comrades had great difficulty trying to reach him, and by the time they finally did, he had died. Sergeant Voltero’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
