The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph Voelker, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 6 December 1944. The 3d Platoon of Company C was assigned the mission of crossing a canal and capturing an area which had been converted into an island by flooding. As a result of the valor and aggressiveness of Private First Class Volker and his comrades under harassing artillery, the mission was successfully accomplished and the island was taken. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
