    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 54 (July 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade Burnette Jerome Vedvik (ASN: 37432493), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 137th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Santa Maria, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 2 February 1945. During an intense enemy artillery barrage, and under direct observation of the enemy, Technician Vedvik, with total disregard for his own safety, left his protected position to rescue three wounded soldiers. Crossing thirty yards of exposed ground, he administered first aid to one of the wounded and removed him to a covered position. Unhesitatingly, he again braved about thirty yards exposed to heavy enemy fire and succeeded in returning to the second wounded soldier to safety. Crossing a road which was being showered with bursting enemy shells and subject to sniper fire, he reached the third casualty, but was unable to move him alone. Returning one hundred yards to an aid station, he obtained a litter squad and carried the wounded man to cover. Through his courageous and heroic action, Technician Vedvik probably saved the lives of three American soldiers and provided a lasting inspiration to his comrades. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
