Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 51 (July 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Homer C. Vaught (ASN: 39155833), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 1st Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division. On ** February 1943, near ***, Tunisia, the tank which Staff Sergeant Vaught was commanding was hit by an enemy shell and set afire. Before leaving his tank he assisted, while under heavy and close enemy fire, in the removal of a member of the crew who was seriously wounded. After the fire had been extinguished Staff Sergeant Vaught went about the area picking up other men and loading them on his tank until it was hit three more times and set afire. He completely disregarded his own welfare by again removing the wounded man from the tank while under heavy and close enemy machine gun and artillery fire. The extraordinary heroism, devotion to duty, and concern for the welfare of his wounded comrade displayed by Staff Sergeant Vaught reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
