(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Gordon Ray True (ASN: 35680662), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 337th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Bisano, Italy, on 9 October 1944. Private True ran through enemy fire to reach a vantage point from which he could use his Tommy Gun effectively against a German platoon which was forming to attack. His one-man counterattack against a force of 40 well-armed Germans resulted in his killing or wounding of at least eight of the enemy, and inspired the rest of the platoon to move forward and capture their objective. Private First Class True’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 85th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
