The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Herman Jenkins Taylor (ASN: 35107902), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Koejaboe, Dutch New Guinea, on 29 April 1944. Private First Class Taylor, at the risk of his life, went to the rescue of his Commanding Officer, who had been wounded and lay in a position directly in front of an occupied enemy dug-out. The officer had fallen in such a manner that his body blocked an attempt by the remainder of the patrol to place fire on the enemy position. Private First Class Taylor moved around the enemy dug-out and although wounded himself by a grenade thrown by the enemy, succeeded in dragging the officer to a position of safety. Private First Class Taylor’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
