    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 43 (July 13, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Henry G. Taber (ASN: 0-382981), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Santa Maria, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. When the enemy attacked and threatened the position of Company G, 127th Infantry Regiment, with machine gun fire, mortar, and small arms fire, Captain Taber, Company Commander, voluntarily crawled under fire to an exposed observation point on high ground. Completely unprotected and fired upon continually, he maintained his position for thirty minutes, in order to determine the position of the enemy weapons. Locating two enemy machine guns about two hundred yards away, he directed the fire which silenced them. While in this exposed position he was hit and mortally wounded. Captain Taber’s inspiring leadership, outstanding heroism, and complete disregard of his own safety, at the cost of his life, are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
