The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charlton Pinkney Sullivan, Jr. (ASN: 34438371), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 54th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Ockfen, Germany, on 25 February 1945. Staff Sergeant Sullivan and his platoon were halted by enemy machine gun fire while they were attacking a pillbox. Running forward under the bursts from the enemy guns, Staff Sergeant Sullivan was wounded several times, but killed the entire pillbox crew with hand grenades. When another machine gun went into action, he fearlessly destroyed a second pillbox unit with hand grenades. Wounded again during his second victorious encounter, he died shortly thereafter. Staff Sergeant Sullivan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 10th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
