Sergeant Sowder accompanied a patrol of 14 volunteers to take an important section of high ground occupied by the Germans. The patrol was trapped by enemy fire, but Sergeant Sowder advanced upon one of the enemy guns with an automatic weapon and killed those operating it. When other enemy gunners swung their weapons upon him, Sergeant Sowder continued firing upon them to permit his comrades to make their say to safety. Sergeant Sowder’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 55th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
