The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Willie Buchanan Slaughter, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in action during attacks to capture Mount Summuere, a mountain fortress guarding the approaches to Cassino, Italy, during World War II. Sergeant Slaughter was leader of a patrol which was to contact the left flank of an adjacent infantry unit, when he encountered an enemy artillery observation post manned by enemy machine gunners and rifleman. Sergeant Slaughter’s submachine gun jammed and, falling to the ground, he then showered the German position with grenades. Although faced with imminent danger of being surrounded and captured by the superior force, he skillfully deployed his men, who took seven prisoners, killed three, and wounded many more. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
