Technician Fifth Grade Schutt attempted to secure aid for his comrades who were isolated on the enemy-held bank of the Saar River. Attempting to cross the river on a raft, he was swept back to the enemy shore by the current but signaled his unit on the opposite shore to let them know of the plight of his companions before an enemy machine gun cut him down. Technician Fifth Grade Schutt’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
