(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Hoyt T. Rowell (ASN: 34353930), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company E, 2d Battalion, 217th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the Argentan-Falaise Gap, France, on 19 August 1944. During the attack on Argentan, Private First Class Rowell rendered aid to wounded riflemen under a hail of enemy shells and bullets. When friendly artillery began to fall close, he raced across the same hazardous route and continued to aid the wounded. Private First Class Rowell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 80th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
