The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles Harris Perkins, Jr. (ASN: 34174475), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces along the Villa Verde Trail, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 29 March 1945. During the battle for Hills 505 and 506, a large number of casualties had been suffered by the 1st Battalion in a matter of five hours. The forward elements were completely cut off and two companies on the trail were pinned down and could not move forward nor backward. An urgent call was received from this force for blood plasma. Private First Class Perkins immediately volunteered to carry the plasma forward. He knew the dangers involved, he could see the pinned down men and the bodies of those who had been killed, yet without hesitation or though of his own life, he ran through the enemy fire and delivered the plasma to the waiting Medical personnel and their wounded. By his bravery and willingness to risk his own life, he saved his wounded comrades and was an inspiration to the entire battalion. He was killed in action on the Villa Verde Trail on 8 May 1945. Private First Class Perkins’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
