(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph A. Odyniec, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 152d Infantry Regiment, 38th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Olongapo, Luzon, Philippine Islands, from on 8 February 1945. When his company led the attack on a Japanese-held hill, Corporal Odyniec, loaded down with an automatic rifle, hand grenades, and a bolo knife, cut his way to a heavy machine gun position. He then came upon six enemy foxholes with connecting trenches. He threw grenades into one hold and with enemy fire concentrating on him, opened fire with his automatic rifle. He killed fifteen enemy soldiers and knocked out the enemy machine gun nest, making it possible to advance. Several days later many of his company suffered casualties from enemy fire while in a dugout. Again, with his automatic rifle, he kept the enemy busy until the wounded were evacuated and a patrol moved in and annihilated the enemy. Corporal Odyniec’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
