Walter Northby was a POW at Cabanatuan for 2 1/2 years. In December 1944 he survived the bombing of the “hell ship” Oryoku Maru and was transferred to the Enoura Maru. It is believed he died along with almost 500 others when it too was bombed in Takao, Formosa in January 1945

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Walter L. Northby (ASN: 0-890216), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 202d Engineer Battalion (Philippine Scouts), Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces from 15 April 1942 to 6 May 1942, at Corregidor, Philippine Islands. First Lieutenant Northby volunteered to man a fire control observation post during a Japanese artillery and aerial bombardment. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
